USA Student Visa (F-1) Guide

The Core Application Steps

  • Step 1: Get Accepted & Receive Form I-20: You must first be accepted by an SEVP-certified school. They will issue your Form I-20, which is the primary document proving your eligibility to apply for a student visa.
  • Step 2: Pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee: Once you have your I-20, you must pay the $350 SEVIS fee online. Keep the receipt; you’ll need it for your interview.
  • Step 3: Complete the DS-160 Form: This is your official online visa application. The current fee is $185. You will need to upload a digital photo and print the confirmation page with the barcode.
  • Step 4: Schedule Your Appointments: Most applicants in India need two appointments: one for biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and one for the consular interview.
  • Step 5: Attend the Visa Interview: A consular officer will interview you to determine if you are a legitimate student with sufficient funding and an intent to return home after graduation.
