The “Big Five” Universal Requirements
Regardless of your destination or purpose of travel, almost every consulate will require the following foundational documents. Ensuring these are ready will save you weeks of processing time.
1. Passport Validity: Must have at least 6 months validity remaining from your date of entry and at least 2 blank pages.
2. Standardized Photographs: Usually 35mm x 45mm or 2×2 inches, with a white background and 80% face coverage (no spectacles/hats).
3. Proof of Financial Means: Bank statements from the last 3–6 months, duly attested by the bank manager.
4. Cover Letter: A formal letter outlining the purpose of your visit, your itinerary, and a declaration of your intent to return.
5. Travel Insurance: A policy covering at least $30,000 (or €30,000 for Schengen) for medical emergencies and repatriation.
Pro-Tip: Always carry both the original documents and two sets of clear photocopies. Consulates rarely provide photocopying services on-site!
